24 JUNE Fractional Systems. Garage Project II, Mackey Garages
Opening Reception on Thursday, 24 June, 7pm

Fractional Systems. Garage Project II

The American domestic garage is a relatively neglected phenomenon whose hinged doors regularly conceal important belongings, activities, and rituals that don’t appear in public.
Throughout the years, the Mackey Apartments and Garages have been in use as a think tank and creative laboratory for artists and architects. After a three-year renovation process to the building itself, the MAK started to rebuild and renew the run down garages and created an additional space, the garage top, finalized in April 2010.

Referring to the site of the Mackey Garages, Peter Noever guest-curates the exhibition Fractional Systems. Garage Project II (June 25 – September 25, 2010) at the five newly rebuilt garage units at the Mackey Apartments (R.M. Schindler 1939).

Three artists and two architects, based in Vienna and Los Angeles, have been invited to explore a garage with individual interventions. Participating artists are Raymond Pettibon, Los Angeles; Franz Graf, Vienna; Elke Krystufek, Vienna; and architects Hernán Diáz Alonso, Los Angeles; and next ENTERprise architects, Vienna.

Additionally, Peter Noever has invited three artists to give suggestions and ideas about artists’ videos to be shown in the recently completed new space above the garages, the Garage Top. The video program has been selected by John Baldessari, Los Angeles, Heinrich Dunst, Vienna and Peter Kogler, Vienna.

7 JULY radio.string.quartet.vienna, Blue Whale, Downtown L.A.
Wednesday, 7 July, 9 pm

radio.string.quartet.vienna: Bernie Mallinger – violin Johannes Dickbauer – violin Cynthia Liao – viola Asja Valcic – cello In the year 2000, a proposal by accordionist and composer Klaus Paier marked the beginning of what later became the radio.string.quartet: all-rounder Bernie Mallinger put together a string quartet for Paier’s CD moviemento, which was enthusiastically acclaimed by the critics and was nominated for the Austrian Amadeus Award. The “radio” in the name stands for contemporary, multifaceted music as well as for entertainment. They demonstrate their uniqueness by playing the works of McLaughlin’s thrilling 70’s electric jazz band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, giving much attention to the details and structure of the original composition. The classical instruments, two violins, a viola and a cello, merge into a new sound that proves to be more than worthy to honor McLaughlin’s music. Bernie Mallinger’s and Johannes Dickbauer’s violins, Cynthia Liao’s viola and Asja Valcic’s cello will take you to places that you won’t expect. Wednesday, 7 July, 9pm Blue Whale (Downtown) 123 Astronaut E S Onizuka Street Los Angeles, CA 90012-3833 Tel (213) 620 0908 Tickets $ 15 (students $ 10) at the Blue Whale.
